New 30A Coastal Cuisine in Alys Beach

What’s a beach vacation without coastal cuisine? Hardly a vacation, that’s what! Fortunately, there are a range of delicious, high-quality seafood restaurants along Scenic Highway 30A on the Emerald Coast. From old favorites to new establishments, you can always find something tasty when vacationing in this beautiful paradise.

If new is what you’re in the mood for, look no further than Alys Beach. This beach town is home to The CITIZEN, a new coastal-inspired tavern. Whether you’re staying in Alys Beach or anywhere else along 30A, you’ll want to add this restaurant to your dining out list.

The CITIZEN opened its doors in Alys Beach on January 22, 2021. The establishment is located on the ground level of The May in the Alys Beach Town Center. Designed by Khoury-Vogt Architects, also the Alys Beach town architects, The CITIZEN blends seamlessly with its environment. Jeremy Walton is the visionary behind the coastal tavern. Walton has over 25+ years of experience in the food, beverage, and hospitality industry, and he has worked with the Alys Beach community for more than five years. In establishing The CITIZEN, Walton drew upon his experience to create not just a restaurant, but a community.

At its core, The CITIZEN is about human connection. It combines an elegant and modern design with extensive food and beverage options, providing a welcoming gathering place for locals and visitors. As the restaurant’s website suggests, The CITIZEN understands that “life is about adventure. Life is made for good friends and great adventures.” This establishment encourages its patrons to live life to its fullest, with good food, good friends, and good fun!

Pulling inspiration from coastal cuisine worldwide, The CITIZEN features a menu that implements local and regionally-sourced fare. Keeping in line with its adventurous roots, the menu distinguishes between more classical plates and more adventurous dishes—giving you the opportunity to take a chance on something you might not normally try. Meals will be cooked using the seven-foot wood burning hearth, ensuring quality in every bite. Some seafood dining options include: Charred Spanish Octopus, Roasted Grouper, Fisherman’s Grits, Gulf Shrimp, Gulf Tuna Poke, and many more. Though much of the food is coastal-inspired, there are plenty of options for the landlubbers as well. You’ll find Beef Tartare, Crispy Smoked Porchetta, Filet of Beef, Hearth Roasted Cauliflower, and others. The highly versatile menu ensures that there is something for everyone.

Besides the food, the bar boasts a great selection of cocktails, wines, and beers. There is also a “Zero Proof” section that features elevated mocktails. Enjoy your meal and drinks, all while chatting with old friends and making new ones. You’ll also love the retractable screens that allow you to look out on the beautiful town of Alys Beach while you dine.

The CITIZEN is open from Monday to Saturday between 4pm and 10pm. Future lunch and brunch times are forthcoming. Though curbside to-go will be available, we encourage you to dine in, as that interaction and connection is part of the restaurant’s charm.

Be sure to check out The CITIZEN the next time you’re in Alys Beach or on 30A!
